This 12-day Pamir Jeep Tour takes you deep into one of the world’s most remote and dramatic mountain regions. Starting in Dushanbe, you follow the legendary Pamir Highway along the Panj River, with constant views into Afghanistan before entering the fertile Wakhan Valley. Ancient fortresses, mineral springs, and soaring 7.000-meter peaks accompany you as you cross high-altitude passes and travel through isolated villages like Langar, Alichur, and Murghab. You explore UNESCO petroglyphs, Soviet-era remnants, and turquoise lakes scattered across the high desert plateaus. The route includes a crossing of the Ak-Baital Pass, the highest drivable point on the Pamir Highway, and visits to the remote Rangkul and Bulunkul regions. On the return, you follow the Gunt Valley back to Khorog and wind along the Panj River to Qal’ai Khumb before finishing in Dushanbe. This journey combines culture, landscapes, adventure and the feeling of true isolation.
The day-to-day itinerary gives a detailed overview of the activities planned for each stage of the trek. The itinerary has been carefully tested and tried. Although it rarely happens, unforeseen circumstances can force us to make (minor) adaptations to the schedule, even during the trip. For example, weather and road conditions may change rapidly while traveling and make certain parts of the route less passable. Flexibility is indispensable when driving through the rugged lands of Tajikistan.
We depart from Dushanbe and begin our journey toward Qal’ai Khumb. The road leads us through rolling hills and agricultural landscapes before reaching the historic Hulbuk Fortress, an excellent stop to stretch our legs. In the afternoon, we officially enter the Pamir region and continue along the Pamir Highway, following the Panj River that forms the natural border with Afghanistan. We spend the night in Qal’ai Khumb (1.250 m), the main town of the Darvoz district.
Today we continue along the Pamir Highway toward Khorog, the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan region. The entire route follows the dramatic Panj River valley, offering constant views into Afghanistan on the opposite side of the gorge. We arrive in Khorog (2.100 m) in the late afternoon and spend the night there.
From Khorog, we continue south, still following the upper Panj River. Along the way, we stop at several viewpoints as well as mineral and hot springs, including the well-known Garm Chashma (Darmadar) and Avj springs, where you can enjoy a soothing bath. Overnight is in the village of Ishkoshim.
We enter the Wakhan Valley and continue along the river. Throughout the day, you will enjoy outstanding views of the Hindu Kush, with peaks rising above 7.000 meters in Afghanistan and even Pakistan. We visit several historic sites, including Kah-Kaha Fortress and the spectacular Yamchun Fortress. There is also time to relax at the Bibi Fatima hot springs. Overnight in Langar (2.800 m).
In the morning, we visit the ancient Ratm Fortress. As we leave the Wakhan Valley, the Panj River narrows and we climb steadily toward the Khargush Pass (4.300 m). Near the pass, those who wish can make a short hike to a 360-degree panoramic viewpoint at around 4.800 m, offering sweeping views over the Pamir highlands. After crossing the pass, we rejoin the Pamir Highway and pass several lakes, including Sassykul and Tuzkul, before reaching the high-altitude village of Alichur (3.900 m), where we spend the night.
From Alichur we head west before turning into a remote desert plateau. Our first stop is the Shakty petroglyph site, a UNESCO-listed location featuring Neolithic rock art. We then continue to the abandoned Shorbulak Observatory, which offers wide open views of the surrounding Pamir landscapes. Later we rejoin the Pamir Highway and continue to Murghab for the night (3.600 m).
This morning we drive to the Rangkul area, home to a large high-altitude lake and also several old Soviet bunkers. At the eastern end of the lake lies the isolated village of Rangkul, where we take time to explore daily life in this extremely remote setting. Afterward, we continue toward Karakul, crossing the Ak-Baital Pass (4.650 m), the highest drivable section of the Pamir Highway. From the pass, we descend directly toward Karakul village, located at 3.900 m on the eastern shore of the lake. Overnight in Karakul.
In the morning, we drive along the northern shore of Karakul to a viewpoint at about 4.700 meters, offering spectacular vistas over both the lake and the lunar-like desert plains around it. Afterwards, we retrace our route back across the Ak-Baital Pass to Murghab, where we spend the night.
From Murghab, we travel westward along the Pamir Highway. We stop in Bulunkul, considered one of the coldest and most extreme villages in the Pamirs, and admire the beautiful Bulunkul Lake. North of the village, we cross a vast desert plateau to visit natural hot springs. We spend the night in Bulunkul (3.750 m).
For the return to Khorog, we take an alternative route. Instead of re-entering the Wakhan, we stay on the Pamir Highway and follow the scenic Gunt River valley. Upon arrival in Khorog, we visit the botanical garden and the local bazaar. Overnight in Khorog.
Today we follow the Panj River back toward Qal’ai Khumb. The return drive offers new perspectives on the dramatic cliffs, riverside villages, and Afghan settlements across the water. Along the way, we make several short stops for photos and to enjoy the landscape one last time. By late afternoon we arrive in Qal’ai Khumb, where we settle in for our final night in the Pamirs.
On our final day, we leave the mountains behind and drive toward Dushanbe. The scenery gradually shifts from narrow gorges to wider valleys and greener landscapes. We stop at a viewpoint over the Nurek Reservoir for one last scenic highlight. In the late afternoon, we reach Dushanbe, where you are dropped off at your hotel and the journey concludes.
