This jeep adventure through Tajikistan’s Khatlon Region takes us deep into a part of the country that few travelers ever see. Over seven days, we cross river valleys, remote mountain basins, and ancient cultural sites while experiencing the raw beauty of Southern Tajikistan. We climb to panoramic viewpoints like Khoja Maston Peak and Takakamar Mountain, visit sacred springs such as Chiluchor Chashma, and follow the Afghan border with striking views across the Panj River. Along the way, we explore restored historical landmarks like Hulbuk Fortress and encounter extraordinary natural formations including the Childukhtaron rocks and the vibrant landscapes of Sari Khosor. We hike through nature refuges, pass traditional villages, and enjoy dramatic views over the Nurek Reservoir. This journey blends rugged exploration, cultural discovery, and moments of quiet mountain beauty: an ideal experience for travelers seeking an authentic, off-the-beaten-path look at Tajikistan.
The day-to-day itinerary gives a detailed overview of the activities planned for each stage of the trek. The itinerary has been carefully tested and tried. Although it rarely happens, unforeseen circumstances can force us to make (minor) adaptations to the schedule, even during the trip. For example, weather and road conditions may change rapidly while traveling and make certain parts of the route less passable. Flexibility is indispensable when driving through the rugged lands of Tajikistan.
After the pick-up in Dushanbe, we start our journey driving south through hilly terrain. For the first stop, we make a short hike to ascend to Khoja Maston Peak (1,940 m), the highest point in Southern Tajikistan, where we enjoy sweeping 360-degree views over the region. After taking in the scenery, we continue to Bokhtar (Qurghonteppa). In the evening, we explore the city before spending the night there.
We cross the Vakhsh River and follow the road through Qubodiyon into the Kafirnigan Valley. When we reach Shahrituz, we hike up Takakamar Mountain, a demanding ascent that rewards us with wide views over the Tajik Depression, the lowest and flattest region of Tajikistan. We stay overnight in the village of Shahrituz.
In the morning, we visit Chiluchor Chashma, a sacred site where dozens of freshwater springs flow from the ground. We then drive toward the border with Afghanistan and follow it for a short stretch, enjoying views across the Panj River toward the Afghan Kunduz and Takhar provinces. Afterward, we head to Hulbuk, where we visit the restored Hulbuk Fortress, a significant medieval palace complex. We spend the night in Hulbuk.
We leave Hulbuk and drive via Kulob and the Muminobod Reservoir into the remote Obisurkh Valley. At the end of the valley, we reach Childukhtaron, an impressive red-stone rock formation linked to local legend. We continue through the high meadows and narrow gorges of the Yakhob Valley, pass through Khovaling, and arrive in Baljuvon, where we stay overnight.
Today, we take an all-terrain 4x4 jeep to drive along the Surkhob River toward Sari Khosor, one of the most beautiful natural reserves in Tajikistan. We continue until the Mullokoni Waterfalls, set among forested slopes. In spring, we experience the area at its most colorful, with lush vegetation and wildflowers such as Afghan redbuds in bloom. We spend the night in Mullokoni village.
We return by jeep through the Surkhob Valley back to Baljuvon. We pass through several remote villages, where you can experience the rural life in one of the most secluded parts of Tajikistan. Back in Baljuvon, we visit the Baljuvon Fortress and the Mausoleum of Shohnematulloi Vali, an important pilgrimage site. We spend the remainder of the day at ease in the area.
In the morning, we hike in the Dashtmaidon Nature Refuge, where we enjoy dramatic views of the Nurek Reservoir and the distant peaks of the Zerafshan Range. After the hike, we drive via Danghara to a viewpoint on the southwestern shore of the Nurek Reservoir. In the late afternoon, we return to Dushanbe, where we end our journey.
